My Higher Power

What if faith and science aren’t enemies? What if your lowest point is the start of something real?

My Higher Power is not your typical “inspirational” book. It’s a brutally honest, sometimes irreverent, always thought-provoking exploration of what happens when you smash together the chaos of addiction, the weirdness of quantum physics, and the messy history of religion—and somehow come out the other side with a faith that actually makes sense.
Matthew R. Mitchell takes you from the wreckage of rock bottom to the mind-bending frontiers of science, from ancient wisdom to modern recovery, and shows how doubt, pain, and relentless curiosity can lead to a faith that’s honest, compassionate, and intellectually leg

Discover a Faith That Makes Sense in a Modern World

Embark on a raw and unflinching journey with “My Higher Power,” a book that courageously explores the often-turbulent intersection of personal struggle, scientific discovery, and profound faith. This isn’t a story of easy answers, but an honest search for meaning in the messy realities of life.

The author shares:
“Think of this book as me trying to build a bridge, not just for myself, but for anyone else standing in that bewildering chasm between doubt and belief. … I’m not here to give you all the answers, nor am I peddling some perfect, neatly packaged explanation of God. If there’s one thing I’ve learned… it’s to be deeply suspicious of anyone who claims they have it all figured out. … What I want to do, with as much honesty as I can muster, is share what I’ve stumbled across – the insights, the paradoxes, the moments of unexpected grace – as a guy who’s navigated some truly profound darkness and, against all odds, found a few persistent sparks of light…”

“My Higher Power” boldly tackles the perceived chasm between faith and reason, particularly in light of modern scientific understanding. It invites readers to consider how the awe-inspiring discoveries of science, including the mind-bending realities of quantum physics, don’t have to be seen as adversaries to a thoughtful faith, but can instead deepen our sense of wonder and connection. As the author found:
“The more I learned, the more I began to realize, with a growing sense of excitement and relief, that faith and science don’t have to be enemies. Maybe, just maybe, they’re just two different languages trying to describe the same ineffable reality, two different ways of asking the same big, fundamental questions: Why are we here? How does any of this intricate, improbable existence make sense?”

Ultimately, this book is a compelling call to rediscover a faith rooted in love, compassion, and intellectual honesty, stripping away dogma to find timeless wisdom. It challenges readers to look beyond rigid interpretations and embrace a spiritual path that is both profoundly personal and universally relevant, emphasizing that:

“Christianity, when you manage to strip away all the centuries of accumulated politics, the power grabs, the theological dogfights, and the undeniable layers of human BS, is, at its core, about love and compassion. … My personal belief about an ideal within the church cannot, and must not, override the unequivocal command to love my neighbor – all of them, without exception.”
This manuscript offers a unique and compelling perspective for anyone seeking a faith that resonates with both the heart and the mind, especially those who have felt alienated by conventional religious narratives or who are looking to reconcile their spiritual questions with a scientific worldview.

About The Author

Matthew R. Mitchell’s path to writing “My Higher Power” was forged in the crucible of profound personal struggle. His early life was marked by a drift from childhood faith into teenage cynism, eventually leading to a full-blown battle with alcoholism that consumed his twenties. This addiction led him to homelessness, multiple near-death experiences, and ultimately, incarceration.
It was during his time in jail, amidst the isolation of COVID-19 lockdowns, and later in a mandated rehab program and sober living, that Matthew embarked on an intensive journey of self-discovery and intellectual exploration. Diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder and Agoraphobia, he embraced Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and the 12-step principles of AA/NA. Simultaneously, he dove deep into the study of quantum physics, cosmology, biblical history, and theology, seeking a faith that could reconcile with reason and his lived experience.
Matthew is not a formally trained scientist or theologian, but a relentlessly curious individual whose “stubborn, persistent open-mindedness” led him to challenge conventional religious dogma and simplistic atheism alike. His insights are born from lived experience, rigorous self-examination, and a passionate desire to share a message of hope and intellectual honesty with others who may be struggling to find a faith that makes sense in the modern world.
